Our Community
Our community is our hometown of Buckingham County, Virginia. Buckingham County, is located south of the James River and is the geographic center of the Commonwealth of Virginia. The county was established in 1761 from the southeastern portion of Albemarle County. The origin of the county name comes from the Duke of Buckingham (Buckinghamshire, England). This is the only Buckingham County in the United States.
As of the census of 2010, there were 17,146 people and 5,695 households residing in the county. The population density was 29.6 people per square mile (10/km²). There were 7,294 housing units . The racial makeup of the county was 62.5% White, 35.1% Black or African American, 0.3% American Indian, 0.4% Asian, 1.7% Hispanic or Latino,and 1.6% from two or more other races. 60.9% of the population identified as White, not Hispanic or Latino.The largest ancestry groups are listed as 18.7% American, 9.2% English, and 5.4% German.

Scholarship Program
Spring 2024 Scholarship Requirements

Purpose: : The purpose of this program is to provide financial support to 10 high school seniors, and/or current college students, attending an accredited two- or four-year college/university, community or junior college, vocational technical, or trade school.
Scholarship Amount: $1,000 per recipient
Application Period: January 9 - March 22, 2024

Eligibility Guidelines:

Applicants must be a Buckingham County resident.

Applicant must:
-
​be a graduating high school senior; or
-
be a high school equivalency (HSE) or general education (GED) recipient; or
-
be a current student attending an accredited two- or four-year college/university, community or junior college, vocational technical, or trade school.

This educational support and scholarship program is open to students of all ages.

Preference will be given to those students who have not been given a previous award, but previous recipients are encouraged to apply.
Application Requirements:

Please submit a short essay, 500-1000 words, describing your ideas on how to make Buckingham County the best place to live, work, and learn for all people.

Please provide two (2) letters of recommendation. (Non-family members)

Please submit a brief biographical summary to describe:

Yourself, your community/school involvement, hobbies, activities, and the school you will, or currently, attend

How this scholarship will benefit you, and
-
What are your future career goals
